Synchronicity: The "Filing System"

There are often living connections that seem to keep the past alive in our lives. Sometimes it can also be quite intriguing as to how many things from our past come back into our lives, often in an amazing series of interconnections. Similarly, the way that some things seem to repeat over and over in our lives and the way that so many things seem to end up "filed" together is often extraordinary.

In my own case, I've noted a number of intriguing "street connections" between places that were important in my life in the past and the same streets today. The street I live on runs into a street called Van Buren, a long street that runs across town to Baseline Road. Its name changes several times. Called Geyer Springs over near Baseline, as it progresses in this direction it changes to Mabelvale, Fair Park, then Van Buren, but is still the same street. Since my original apartment in Little Rock in 1975 and '76 had been at the intersection of Geyer Springs and Baseline, I could get on the same street today and drive from there to my present apartment! Yet, there had been no thinking about this, no planning.

Similarly, there is a stretch of road called "Batesville Pike." It doesn't run all the way to Batesville in its present form but apparently did at one time and today runs in that same direction from Little Rock. It's significant that the highway into Batesville from my parents' house in Pleasant Plains, called Batesville Boulevarde, runs almost directly to the same street, Hill Street, that our home in Batesville was on. It also stops directly in front of the grocery store that we frequently shopped at.

Again, there was no planning to any of this. All of these places were simply in the backs of all our minds in one way or another. We anticipated seeing these places; and in some manner they stayed in, or came back into, our lives.

My family members have pointed out to me a number of interesting coincidences and synchronicities. My sister Amy and her husband Glenn lived for a number of years in Littleton, Colorado. We recently learned that the baby brother of my mother's father was named Littleton. My sister Ann noted that her grand-mother-in-law in Houston had as her original maiden name "Birch." Birch is also my grandmother on my father's side's maiden name. Interestingly, too, grandma was possibly born in eastern Arkansas and Ann's grand-mother-in-law was born in Forrest City, in the eastern part of the state.

My sister Sue pointed out that the apartment where she and Jay lived in St. Louis had, years before, been the home of a Dr. Hathcock, then in medical school. He had never heard of us back then, but in the '60's he was to become our family doctor in Batesville!

Nicholson was the street I lived on in 1982 when Oscar had pulled a gun on me and taken my books and other belongings. (He claimed I didn't pay the rent. I'd trusted him and hadn't gotten a receipt for the rental payment I'd made to him.)

In seemingly disconnected events, a woman I'd loved and learned was a lesbian when I worked at ToysRUs in Houston was named Ann; another Ann worked at K-Mart in Houston. Both had "connections" to my "crush object," Gloria Steinem: Ann at ToysRUs's lesbianism and Ann at K-Mart's brown eyes, blond hair and mannerisms like Gloria's.

The connection continued. I had a crush on my English teacher in Batesville High School, writing her love letters and poems, a few of which I mailed to her. When I returned to university, my English teacher had been Dr. Zabelle Stodola, recently from England with an English accent. Finally, tying it all together, a major announcer on the university radio station was Ann Nicholson, who also spoke with a pronounced English accent.

Native Americans in their traditions about prayer songs and rituals often made the point that these were more powerful if one assumed they had already worked their magic. And in the book Change Your Life Through Prayer, among the techniques given for more effective prayer is one described in the Bible: "When you stand praying, whatsover ye pray for, believe ye have already received and it shall be added unto you." The book describes how the imagery of something already heavily present in our minds, tends to match up with that image in the real world. This same point is made repeatedly by Norman Vincent Peale (The Power of Positive Thinking) and Dr. Maxwell Maltz (Psycho-Cybernetics). And in the study of synchronicity, one becomes conscious that imagery tends to match itself in both the mental and material worlds.

This may be the result of the "filing" system that seems to take place in the universe so much of the time. Thus, if one is thinking about something a lot, then puts it out of the mind and then comes back to it, it seems to manifest itself more in the material world. This phenomenon is noted in a number of sources, including the son of Edgar Cayce, Hugh Lynn Cayce, in his book Venture Inward, and books by Charles Fort, in his collections of "Fortean phenomena"

What seems apparent to me is that, as a result of this filing system, things that are similar tend to get filed together. If one anticipates gloom and doom, a lot of doom and gloom tends to form around one; if one anticipates good things, more tend to happen. However, one has to consciously form the image then let go of it, turning it over to the subconscious, for such action to take place. We then have an emotional and therefore electrical connection to the image. Emotions know no limits in time or space. Though we once thought it impossible to transcend the speed of light, the "limiting speed" of the universe, we've recently learned that some subatomic particles don't "know" about this limitation, transcending time, space and the speed of light by moving forward and backward in time.

Dr. Peale noted that we've learned that many objects that seem "solid" are composed of atoms and therefore are mostly empty space. This same point was addressed by Harold Sherman in books such as How To Make ESP Work For You. Robert Collier also wrote about it in his booklet The Magic Story: The Message of A Master, given to me by my late grandfather on my mother's side ( the one with baby brother Littleton).

Few of these people ever met each other or even read each other's work! Yet they came, via disparate routes and religions, to many of the same, largely secular, conclusions. (There isn't much official sanction in established world religions about Synchronicity or coincidence.) Perhaps that in itself is yet another example of a great "filing system."

Charles Berlitz, in his book The World of the Odd and the Awesome (New York: Fawcett, 1991), on the subject of coincidence, notes in a section called "Beyond Coincidence," the following: "Thomas Baker has finished his shopping at the Northgate Shopping Center, and he was ready to go home. He walked up to what he thought was his 1978 maroon American Motors Concord and unlocked the door. But something was wrong. The seat seemed out of whack. He couldn't fit his six-foot-six-inch frame comfortably under the wheel. Glancing around the car, he noticed a caddy holding coffee cups and other unfamiliar items. Baker decided to call the police.

"While he was discussing the situation with the officers, an identical Concord drove up. The elderly couple inside explained they were loading groceries into the car when they had found it contained unfamiliar personal objects. A check of the license plate showed that even though the car they were driving looked like theirs, it was someone else's.

"According to American Motors Corporation (AMC) spokesman Ben Dunn, the odds of unlocking two AMC cars with the same key are 1,000 to 1. "But when you consider the matching color and model and the fact the cars were parked in the same place at the smae time," he says, "the odds become more like ten thousand to one."

Berlitz goes on to note that the odds of this particular incident shrank further when the drivers learned they shared more than taste in cars. Thomas Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baker also had the same last name. Berlitz then notes that psychiatrist James Hall of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas calls this yet another example of the kind of thing Jung referred to as a "synchronicity: meaningful coincidences for which ordinary chance is not a significant explanation (206-7)."

More interesting coincidences: the hidden history of World War II

There are other kinds of coincidences that aren't caused by such mysterious forces, but which have been mysteries of another kind. Those involved human beings in cover-ups of illegal activities. In investigating those illegal activities, one often comes across such "coincidences" of yet another nature. One of the most intriguing areas of investigation, in terms of new information, is that of the "hidden history" of World War II treason.

Former CIA Director Allen Dulles was Prescott Bush's attorney and business partner during and after World War II. He was also a partner in the Standard Oil Company, which was found guilty of treason during the War (Higham Trading 61-2). A partner of his at Standard oil was James V. Forrestal, who was Secretary of the Navy in 1944-45 and later Secretary of Defense.

Dulles engaged in "machinations in Thailand" to secure a secret, separate peace agreement with the Axis that were illegal, in order to smuggle the illegal money he had made from aiding the Third Reich during the Second World War (Loftus and Aarons 111). Intriguingly, a Japanese agent named Tsuji Masanobu was used by Dulles and the Japanese in their secret negotiations with Chiang kai Shek (Bergamini 1004, 1103-4). Dulles prevented the prosecution of Masanobu for the war crimes for which he was largely responsible, apparently in order to avoid the risk of his revealing the level of Dulles's involvement with him (Loftus and Aarons 500). In 1961, shortly after JFK took office, before Dulles left as DCI and when CIA personnel had already increased significantly in numbers there, Masonobu disappeared while in Laos (Halliday Imperialism 103). The suspicion is thus strong that Dulles had him done away with.

We now know that Dulles "switched to couriers"in his secret and illegal negotiations with the Japanese and Nazis in 1944 to avoid FDR's surveillance of he and Forrestal. Roosevelt had long since determined that the two were not to be trusted in national security matters (Loftus and Aarons 139). Dulles was trying to negotiate a settlement of World War II with the Nazis and Japanese behind FDR's back that would involve the Axis making peace with America while continuing to fight the USSR. That would, in turn, have protected his secret wealth earned through the Third Reich by getting it smuggled to the Vatican and then Switzerland (Loftus and Aarons 111).

Dulles handled at least one Japanese gold transfer to the Vatican via the "Max" network. The Max group was a network of Jewish double agents who operated a spy system within the Communist USSR's spy system, and often to good effect (Loftus and Aarons 138-45).

Count Folke Bernadotte was a friend of Dulles who headed the International Red Cross and who was an anti-Semite and closet Nazi sympathizer. He permitted the Red Cross to be used as a vehicle for Nazi intelligence during the War (Loftus and Aarons 143). General Robert C. Davis headed the New York chapter of the American Red Cross. He had ties to the Nazis and allowed his organization to be used along with Bernadotte's people to aid the Nazis. He also had business ties with the Nazis, including a Board membership in the Nazi-controlled Transradio corporation that operated out South America. That company illegally transmitted sensitive intelligence information to the Nazis and the Japanese until early 1944 (Higham Trading 18, 107-11).

During that same time, Dulles trusted the "Max" network to continue his negotiations with both the Germans and the Japanese to secure a separate peace. According to an account by Count Schellenberg, one of the plotters who tried to kill Hitler and worked with Dulles extensively to try to negotiate his "separate peace" without FDR's knowledge, that Max network had the only communication system that the Germans would trust to negotiate with Japan. US intelligence files later confirmed that the Max network's head was also the head of the Russian Fascist Union in Japan and that his White Russian network had been subsidized by the Japanese General Staff. Dulles swallowed the bait of the Max network. He thought it was a secure way to negotiate his German-Japanese-British-American alliance against Stalin without Roosevelt finding out. The Jews in the Communist-sponsored Max network thus knew about those Dulles illegal negotiations with the Nazis and used their knowledge to blackmail Dulles into helping rescue Jews out of Europe in the second half of 1944 (Loftus and Aarons 138-41).

James Jesus Angleton was involved in those complex negotiations and, years later, George Bush gave Angleton access to sensitive files that would have given Congressional investigators information on the details of those negotiations. Angleton, on being given such access, destroyed those files. It is doubtful that Bush didn't know ahead of time that he would destroy them (Loftus and Aarons 82).

Dulles arranged via the Vatican to use a Maronite priest to run a courier network out of Japanese-occupied Manchuria for him. Those couriers were Vatican intelligence personnel who had diplomatic immunity and could therefore fly into and out of both Allied and Axis countries. The priest was made a Bishop with the name Cikota (Loftus and Aarons 85). A major group of Vatican intelligence agents and couriers is the Knights of Malta. The late William Casey, former CIA head, was a member of the Knights of Malta (Honnegar 235).

Richard J. Larkin, vice-president of Standard Oil during World War II, was made a Knight of Malta by the Pope in 1928. Larkin maintained illegal business arrangements with the Nazis at the Chase Bank branches in France throughout the war (Higham Trading 21; 28-31).

The Truman Committee in Congress in 1942 found cables from Standard Oil to Japan saying that Standard Oil. would continue trade with Japan regardless of whether the US came into the war (Higham Trading 42-53). Similar documents from Standard Oil agents in Romania in 1940 were signed off on by Hermann Göering. Documentation confirms that Standard kept its word to Hitler throughout the War by allowing the Nazis access to Standard's Rumanian oil. They continued to hold the 13 million dollar bond Göering signed to them for the oil and continued to honor it (Higham Trading 36-8; Litchfield 125-7). That suggests Standard honored all of its pledges to continue trading with Axis countries, including Japan, regardless of whether the US entered the war.

We also know that Dulles was aware as early as 1939 of secret British Right efforts to negotiate a settlement with the Axis out of Spain through Sir Samuel Hoare, and that he continued to know about their ongoing nature throughout the War. This group was known as the "Halifax faction" and included former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Hess's parachuting into England was in response to this group. One of the things he offered had to do with the Axis coup in Iraq (Loftus and Aarons 90). According to American State Department Files, "Americans and White Russians" assisted Iranians and Iraqis in their efforts to become pro-Axis states (Foreign Affairs 383-5). The Mufti of Jerusalem, a Hitler ally, and Nazi agents led by Franz Grobba operated out of Baghdad and Turkey to influence both Iraq and Iran in a pro-Axis direction (Higham 82-3). Most Americans in the area at the time were oil company employees (ARAAMCO 110-111).

The Vatican was acting as an intermediary in peace talks between this group and Japan. One former intelligence officer who had served in the OSS knew about censored intercepts between the Vatican, this group and the Japanese. He left the US National Archives and flew to Japan where he found the Japanese had declassified their half of the correspondence. The intercepts confirm the Vatican as deeply involved in Japanese negotiations and as desperately trying to stop the fighting before a total Allied victory left the Red Army in control of Catholic Central Europe (Loftus and Aarons 91).

The Japanese had placed at least two "fake" Catholic priests on heavily Catholic Guam after November 1942. US Navy guerilla George Tweed, who was on Guam from its capture by the Japanese in December 1941 until its recapture by US forces in 1944, suggests they were overly sympathetic to the Axis. They apparently sent out letters in behalf of the Japanese asking Tweed to surrender and sometimes betrayed the confidence of Tweed and his Guamanian assistants. Other information also suggests some of these were not completely legitimate priests. This includes the fact that one "substitute" priest's brother was a leading banker on the island who cooperated with the Japanese during their occupation, and the existence of ruthless threats of lawsuits against seaman Tweed by this "priest" and his family because of Tweed's publication of the "priest's" activities during World War II. Those legal threats were written in a very un-priest-like manner (Tweed 129-31; 133; 135; 158-61; 204-5; 259; 307).

During this same time period of the summer of 1944, while Dulles and Standard Oil were engaged in massive negotiations with the Axis, former President George Bush's whereabouts become interesting. One of Bush's squadron members in his Navy flying group was a pilot named Dick Houle. Houle was forced to land his airplane--a three-man crewed Avenger torpedo bomber, the same type plane then being flown by George Bush--on the water near Guam, in June, 1944. This was an emergency procedure which allowed only enough time for the crewmen to abandon the plane in a raft before the plane sank. What is significant about this event, is that its date is uncertain. Various sources list it as occurring on June 16 (Hyams 80) and June 20, 1944 (Stinnett 80-1). Another possible date would be June 19, 1944, the date of the Battle of the Philippines Sea, which was a major sea battle involving virtually all US warplanes in the area. A photograph of Houle's plane water landing in sight of the US destroyer C K Bronson exists. Houle's crew was picked up by the destroyer Healy (Stinnett 80-1; log of USS Healy, June 24, 1944, which records the return of Houle and his crew to their carrier, USS San Jacinto, also Bush's home ship, on the same date as Bush and his crew were returned from the USS Terry, to which they had by then been transferred).

The actual date could be of immense importance, since the deck log of the C K Bronson has a partially secondhand account of the sighting of the water landing of an Avenger at 1309 and then, only a minute later, says its crew was picked up by the C K Bronson. Clearly, the crew picked up by the CK Bronson was already in a raft at 1309, for it to have been picked up so quickly. This suggests a discrepancy as to the plane sighted water landing and the three-man crew picked up in the raft (Log of USS C K Bronson, June 19, 1944).

If this occurred on June 19, 1944, Houle's plane's water landing could be recorded by the C K Bronson's log, while the pick up of Bush's crew on a raft is what actually took place. And if that were true, Bush's crew needn't have been on a plane in the water, merely in the raft. The plane Bush was flying may have been left on Guam, in fact. Perhaps that could have happened because Bush, as an agent of Knight of Malta Richard Larkin and in behalf of his father's attorney Allen Dulles, Standard Oil partner Navy Secretary James Forrestal, and his father's company, Standard Oil, had delivered that courier-delivered message to Japan regarding Dulles planned flight of Bishop Cikota into and out of Japanese-occupied Manchuria planned for late 1944 and early 1945 referred to by Loftus and Aarons in their account cited above. That account tells us that such a courier had to have existed, but fails to tell us his name. By yet another interesting coincidence, the Japanese Marianas commander, who normally operated from Saipan, was on Guam that day (Hoyt 271).

Intriguingly, US Marine Tom Devine reported seeing Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, a partner with Dulles in the illegal negotiations with the Axis, on Saipan island in July 1944. He had flown in an aircraft, apparently from a nearby island (Devine 38-42).

One nearby island, a relatively large one which could hide an aircraft, was Guam. Both Guam's and Saipan's airfields were usable by US planes by July 31, 1944 (Hoyt 271). Devine says Forrestal then destroyed the aircraft (38-42).

Devine later assumed the plane in question might have been "Amelia Earhart's plane" (Devine 38-51). But traces of the latter seem to have been found on Nikkumaroru Atoll in the Phoenix Islands, thousands of miles from the Marianas group (to which Saipan and Guam belonged) but only a few miles from Amelia's last known radio transmissions near Howland Island (Wilkinson 26). If the plane Devine saw burned wasn't Amelia's, what plane was it? And why would the Secretary of the Navy personally burn an aircraft? Devine also says a submarine reported burning, sinking wreckage off the coast of Saipan in July, 1944, and that this wasn't from a sinking ship because no ships had been sunk that day (Devine 38-51).

Verbal accounts recited by Bush biographer Robert Stinnett suggest that Bush and his crew "didn't even get their feet wet" when they were pulled onto the rescue destroyer, the C K Bronson (74). Bush's plane had been loaded with depth charges, making it heavier than a normal Avenger. Even a normally-loaded Avenger didn't stay afloat more than about two minutes, so it's unlikely Bush's crew that day wouldn't have gotten wet before they were in the raft if they had actually gotten out of that water-landed Avenger. (Tarpley and Chaitkin 47-55).

In Spring 1944, Dulles had used Masanobu in negotiations with Chiang Kai Shek to betray his own generals and allow the Japanese to capture US airfields in Northern China from which it had planned to bomb Japan but was prevented by the Japanese seizure (Bagby 234). Additionally, in April 1943, Nelson Rockefeller, Prescott Bush, Sr.'s, boss, sold tons of aviation fuel to the Axis over the telephone (Loftus and Aarons 167-70). In October and November 1942, Bush's father was indicted for being a front man for Nazi loans (Tarpley and Chaitkin 26-42). In June 1942, "someone" pulled strings and got George Bush into the Navy as a pilot at the age of 18 and without two years of college, which was Naval regulation (Tarpley and Chaitkin 42-107). On May 2, 1944, Standard Oil and its banking affiliates, with Prescott Bush, Sr., on their Boards, sold oil to Germany via Spain (Higham Trading 58-71; Bowen 2-11). Two weeks later, May 15, 1944, George Bush flew his first mission in the Pacific against the Japanese (Hyams 157-71). Allen Dulles was Prescott's attorney throughout and after World War II, even as he negotiated with the Axis illegally (Tarpley and Chaitkin 42-107; Bowen 2-11). Prescott Bush also remained on the Boards of Directors of pro-Nazi corporations that helped the Axis throughout World War 2, until 1952. Prescott Bush was also a member of a pro-Nazi eugenics group from before 1934 until at least the 1950s (Bowen 2-11; Tarpley and Chaitkin 30-41; 150-6).

The log of George Bush's carrier, the San Jacinto, remained classified until the 1980s, when Reagan and Bush were in the White House Most US warship logs of WW2 were declassified in the Kennedy Administration (Tarpley and Chaitkin 68-171).

Heirs of Nazi sympathizers have contributed heavily to Bush's political campaigns and he clearly considers them close friends (Tarpley and Chaitkin 30-171; Bowen 2-11). All this leads to a second look at the further interesting "coincidental" repetition of certain names in later scandals.

The names Rockefeller, John J. McCloy, the Mufti of Jerusalem, that of Saddam Hussein's uncle (who was part of the 1941 Iraq coup addressed Hess's visit to England) and Chase Bank--all interconnected during the period of World War II treason--crop up again in newly-discovered secret documents that reveal the likelihood that the 1980 "October Surprise" scandal actually happened (Parry 39-45; Honnegar 117; Miller 178-9; Sulh 134-5; Warner 75-6; 99; 108; 118; Higham Trading 82-3). Those documents suggest Bush's involvement with the continued holding of the hostages by the Iranians until Carter was defeated in the 1980 election (the "deal" which supposedly had been struck) was real, and that it involved P-2, the Fascist-sponsored secret group in Italy (Honnegar 100-217). That group was, in turn, tied in with the Knights of Malta, to which Casey, Alexander Haig and probably George Bush were connected (Honnegar 100-217).

If Bush did act as a courier or agent of the Axis for some period of time in World War II, he apparently wasn't alone. Martin James Monti commandered a US warplane in Italy in October 1943 and landed behind German lines, to become a propagandist for the Axis. He was later rewarded by Allen Dulles, who saw to it that he not only avoided prosecution and execution for treason, but got promoted in the military (Higham, Swastika 78). Similarly, Laurens van Der Post, a Dutch pilot, was ordered to fly to Japanese military headquarters on Java late in the war to order the Japanese to assist the returning Allies in putting down the native revolts they had originally inspired (Halliday, Pol. Hist. Japan, 152).

While such coincidences aren't of the same nature and are caused by different kinds of forces, much more human in nature, they still represent more of the "undercurrents in all our lives". They also illustrate a "filing system" of quite another kind, one accomplished by human beings seeking to hide something. However, it may be that the imagery common in the philosophies of these various souls may also have helped to get them "filed" together and to cause some of the coincidence of their locales and activities. Perhaps the wisdom we can glean in understanding other synchronous events can be used to help us forgive those whose coincidence of views and activities is more negative in nature.
