Encountering Prescott Bush

By the time I moved back to Little Rock in 1984, I'd gotten the distinct impression that there was a cover-up going on about the information contained in that 1980 radio book ad. That mysterious book, with its striking allegation about George Bush flying his plane onto an enemy-held island and delivering a message to the Japanese, seemed to have all too easily disappeared.

The bookstore clerks I'd asked found nothing, so I gravitated to libraries. I brushed up on my research skills. I relied on librarians to answer my bizarre questions about that equally bizarre radio ad.

It wasn't until 1989 that I learned that Standard Oil, George Bush's father's company, had committed treason during the Second World War. That truth was revealed increasingly after 1983, when English writer Charles Higham released Trading With The Enemy in New York via Delacorte Press. He followed that in 1985 with American Swastika.

Shortly afterward, Webster G. Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin produced a soon-to-be-infamous negative biography of George Bush entitled The Unauthorized Biography of George Bush. During that same time period, Christopher Simpson came out with Blowback and Russ Bellant released another edition of his chronicle of the shocking Nazi connections of the Reagan and Bush Administrations, Old Nazis, The New Right and the Republican Party. Over the next decade those books gradually revealed the true picture of high-level World War II treason by some of America's wealthy families, big petrochemical conglomerates and major multi-national manufacturing corporations.

Like millions of other Americans, I gradually came to read many of these books and their shocking revelations. Along with them, I also read books about the on-going scandals of the Reagan-Bush years.(1) As a result, I became aware there had been a major cover-up of that World War II treason. Topping all of this off was the release in 1994 by St. Martin's Press of the John Loftus and Mark Aarons blockbuster The Secret War Against the Jews, was the final key to my understanding the plausibility of the ad's charge.

I then read Silent Coup by Colodny and Gettlin and other books which gave the "inside skinny" on a number of recent events. That helped me realize more than ever that there were, indeed, undercurrents in all our lives. And it helped me to become more aware that Prescott Bush, George Bush's father, was indeed a pro-Nazi figure in American history. As a result of my searching and reading, I found a good bit of data, shocking in its details, which deserves, at least in part, to be presented in the bold-faced, capital letters that it has deserved and never gotten over all these years:

"ON OCTOBER 20, 1942, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ORDERED THE SEIZURE OF NAZI GERMAN BANKING OPERATIONS IN NEW YORK CITY WHICH WERE BEING CONDUCTED BY PRESCOTT BUSH. Under the Trading with the Enemy Act, the government took over the Union Banking Corp.'s stock shares, all of which were owned by Prescott Bush, E. Ronald 'Bunny' Harriman, three Nazi executives, and two other associates of Prescott Bush...[B]y October 26,1942, U.S. troops were under way for North Africa. On October 28, the government issued orders seizing two Nazi front organizations run by the bank (in which Bush was a partner): the Holland-America Trading Corporation and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation...U.S. forces landed under fire near Algiers on November 8, 1942; heavy combat raged throughout November. Nazi interests in the Silesian-American corporation, long managed by Prescott Bush and his father-in-law, George Herbert Walker, were seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act, on Nov. 17, 1942...President Roosevelt's Alien Property Custodian, Leo T. Crowley, signed Vesting Order #248 seizing the property of Prescott Bush under the Trading with the Enemy Act (Tarpley and Chaitkin 30-46. Emphasis added).

As with so much information about the Bush family's shady dealings, this information was underreported. Tarpley and Chaitkin tell us it was virtually hidden in the New York Times at the time. They note that the order, published in obscure government record books and kept out of the news, "explained nothing about the Nazis involved; only that the Union Banking Company was run for the 'Thyssen Family' of 'Germany and/or Hungary--Nationals...of a designated enemy country.'. . . The government had decided that Prescott Bush and the other directors of the Union Banking Company were legally front men for the Nazis." (Tarpley and Chaitkin 26-8. Emphasis added).

In a footnote, they point out that The New York Times on December l6, l944, ran a five-paragraph, page 25 article on actions of the NewYork State Banking Department,in which only the last sentence referred to the Union Banking Company, 39 Broadway, New York, as having received authority to change its principle place of business to l20 Broadway. "The Times omitted the fact that the Union Banking Company had been seized by the government for trading with the enemy, and even the fact that l20 Broadway was the address of the Alien Property Custodian." (Tarpley and Chaitkin 42).

As for the political career of this illustrious, patriotic American, we find that it didn't exactly get off to a glowing start, and for good reason:

" . . . Prescott Bush. . .made his first attempt to enter national politics in l950 . . .The race was for the two-year unexpired term left empty by the death of the previous Senator from Connecticut . . .Now, in l950, people who knew something about Prescott Bush knew he had very unsavory roots in the eugenics movement . . .[V]ery late in the 1950 senatorial campaign, Prescott Bush was publicly exposed for being an activist in that section of the old Fascist eugenics movement. (Tarpley and Chaitkin 73-5. Emphasis added.)."

But wasn't this a man who understood the problems of working Americans, and who raised a son who could do the same? Well, we know he worked, all right. The company he worked for, at least a good part of his life, was the Standard Oil Company or its affiliates and banking associates.

In l941, Standard Oil of New Jersey was the largest petroleum corporation in the world. Its bank was Chase, its owners the Rockefellers. Its chairman, Walter C. Teagle, and its President, William S. Farrish, had extensive connections with the Nazi government (Higham, Trading 32-5). However, by April l7 l945 the Chase National Bank "was placed on trial in federal court on charges of having violated the Trading With the Enemy Act." (Higham, Trading 26-31).

Standard Oil also taught the Nazi German chemical company I.G. Farben how to make tetraethyl lead and add it to gasoline to make leaded gasoline. That information was priceless, since leaded gas was essential for modern mechanized warfare. One I.G. Farben memo noted Standard Oil's help in procuring $20 million worth of aviation fuel. "The fact that we actually succeeded by means of the most difficult of negotiations in buying the quantity we needed... and transporting it to Germany, was made possible only through the aid of the Standard Oil Company (emphases added)."According to a l992 article in the Village Voice, Brown Brothers Harriman was the Wall Street investment firm that arranged for a loan of tetraethyl lead to the Nazi Luftwaffe in l938. A senior managing partner of the firm was George Bush's father, Prescott Bush. (It's A Conspiracy l25-7).< p In a reference adding to this information, Bowen tells us thatStandard Oil remained in partnership with Farben in the matter of tetraethyl lead, an additive used in aviation gasoline. Goering's air force couldn't fly without it... The result was that Hitler's air force was rendered capable of bombing London. And by supplying Japan with tetraethyl, Teagle helped make it possible for the Japanese to wage WorldWar2.(Bowen2-11) In regard to William Stamps Farrish, a name which was to be closely associated with the Bush family for three entire generations preceding, during and after World War II, Higham had this to say:

"William Stamps Farrish... was mesmerized by Germany... [H]e staffed the Standard Oil tankers with Nazi crews. When war broke out in Europe, he ran into trouble with British Intelligence, which boarded some of his vessels outside U.S territorial waters on the Atlantic and Pacific seaboards and seized Nazi agents who were passengers...When the British began interrogating Nazi crews on the Hitler-Standard connection, Farrish fired the Germans and changed the registry of the entire fleet to Panamanian to avoid British search and seizure. His vessels carried oil to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where they refueled and siphoned oil to German tankers for shipment to Hamburg. They also fueled U-boats even after the American government... was fighting an undeclared war in the Atlantic...Standard tankers supplied the submarines which... sank American ships..." (Higham, Trading 35-6).

"At last [Ickes] found an ally who had the courage to confront [Standard Oil] in Washington: Thurman Arnold...Standard underwent a process of law in the criminal courts of Newark, New Jersey. This was a technicality to satisfy public opinion (at first). The charges of criminal conspiracy with the enemy were dropped in return for Standard releasing its patents and paying the modest fines (of $l0,000-20,000)...On March 26, l941, Arnold appeared before the Truman Committee (in Congress) ...in order to lay in front of the committee his specific charges against the oil company...He showed how Farrish had flagrantly disregarded Lend-Lease and good neighbor policies in his connivance with Hitler. He zeroed in on the subject of synthetic rubber, pointing out that it had been denied to the U.S. Navy, and that Farrish...had deliberately sidetracked a Navy representative from seeing the process. He charged that cables showed Standard's arrangements with Japan that were to continue throughout any conflict or break in trade. Leaving the Senate chamber on March 28, l941, surrounded by lots of reporters and photographers, Truman was asked, 'Is this treason?' He replied in the affirmative." (Higham, Trading 42-53).

"When war broke out, Frank A. Howard, one of the more dynamic vice-presidents of Standard [also on the board of Chase Bank], flew to Europe with Farrish's authorization...meeting with Farben's representative Fritz Ringer...The two men drew up an agreement that specified they would remain in business together, 'Whether or not the United States came into the war[emphases added]...' (Higham, Trading 34-60)."

Higham also tells us in the same section that Farrish had at that point already exploited the resources of Rumania for several years, and continued to do so throughout the war. Hermann Goering paid $ll million in bonds for the use of Standard's Rumanian oil, whether or not America came into the war. Higham also tells us:

" Farrish fueled the Nazi-controlled L.A.T.I. airline from Rome to Rio via Madrid, Lisbon, and Dakar. The airline flew spies, patents and diamonds for foreign currency. Only Standard could make this shipment possible. Only Standard had the high octane gasoline that enabled the lumbering clippers to make the l,680-mile hop across the Atlantic...LATI was the means by which the Nazis evaded the British blockade. The airline was not subject to boarding and search. Spies traveled by LATI between the U.S., Germany and Italy by way of Brazil. In addition to spies, the planes flew, in l941, 2,365 kilos of books containing Nazi propaganda [and] legal and illegal drugs... shipped the Nazis thousands of kilos of mica and platinum... strategic war materials for Germany. Farrish suppl[ied] LATI and the other Nazi airline, Condor, through Standard's Brazilian subsidiary and the airlines continued to fly... he was not subject to blacklisting...[T]he shipments continued until after Pearl Harbor, when the Brazilian government stepped in and closed down the airline. Farrish totally ignored his government's request to be loyal. Germany and money came first." (Higham 34-60).

George Bush carefully rejected any discussion of the 'Nazi word' in three consecutive Presidential campaigns: not at all surprising, says Bowen, in light of the fact that Bush's closest friend and confidante is "Texas mystery man William Stamps Farrish III, inheritor of the Auschwitz death camp fortune. . . Farrish's family fortune was made in the same Nazi enterprise with George Bush's father . . . The joint enterprise had opened the Auschwitz slave labor camp on June l4, l940, to produce artificial rubber and gasoline from coal. Jews and political opponents supplied by Hitler as slaves were worked to death or murdered. . . In fact, Standard Oil's dealing with Hitler continued right up to the end of World War II." (Bowen 2-4).

In leading into the previously mentioned section about the indictment of Farrish for treason, Higham notes:

"Immediately after Pearl Harbor, Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, and Petroleum Administrator and Coordinator for national Defense and War, began to close in on Farrish because of his dealings with Nazi Germany." (Higham 38-42).

What did Prescott do when he then learned his business associate was a traitor? Did he immediately denounce him? On the contrary "The Bushes...stuck with the Farrishes through their disastrous exposure during WW2 ." (Tarpley and Chaitkin 77).

Not only this: the Bushs have maintained friendly relations with the Farrishs ever since, as Pete Brewton notes. Brewton also tells us that between l980 and l985 Neil Strauss who is related to Robert Strauss, the U.S. Ambassador to Moscow, "participated in a noteworthy land purchase. They bought a 21,185 acre ranch northwest of Houston. ..from the family of the late Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle. Somoza's family, consisting of his nephews and cousins, purchased the ranch in September, l977 from William Stamps Farrish III. Farrish, the grandson of a founder of Exxon, is one of George Bush's friends and has handled Bush's blind trust investments. . . Every autumn, Bush visits Ferret's ranch near Beeville in South Texas to hunt quail." (Brewton 354). It's bizarre that the words blind trust, even in the banking sense, should be applied to that relationship. Perhaps the Third is a friend, but the First was definitely an enemy, in effect, of George Bush, just in terms of day to day combat-related activity in WW2! (See "Get Mad, George!" in the present book for more on these questionable friendships.) What are we to say of the patriotism of these men? Certainly, Prescott and his friends made some money off the Second World War. Their boss, Mr. Rockefeller, also wrote a letter to Nazi Germany in 1939 that renewed its agreements with the Nazis andwhich made it clear that the Rockefellers' company was prepared to work with the Nazis whether their own government was at war with the Third Reich or not. (Loftus and Aarons 63-7).

And what kinds of organizations does this patriotic George Bush, former President, who frequently accused Presidential candidate Bill Clinton of being a "draft dodger" or lacking in patriotism, belong to?

"Like his father before him, George Bush's biography pays scant attention to his l948 membership in Skull and Bones, a society so secret that virtually nothing is known about it or its membership.

"One researcher has spent several years in an unsuccessful attempt to have Bush admit this membership and present an open book to the electorate about his oath of allegiance to this secret society..." (Bowen l6-l7).

His activity in this organization is especially intriguing when one realizes its close ties to the pro-Nazi and pro-fascist group of American industrialists who in 1934 plotted to overthrow and possibly kill President Franklin D. Roosevelt:

"Fascism in America: Some powerful Wall Street leaders were so outraged by President FDR that they wanted to replace him with a dictator. Was it believable that industrialists would plot to take over the government? In the l930's it was...

"FDR did what he could to get the economy moving...and big business hated him for it...many American industrialists looked longingly at the growing Fascist movements in Europe, and some invested heavily in rebuilding and rearming Germany...'In l935,' writes Higham, 'Irene duPont used General Motors money to finance the notorious Black Legion...

"' The members wore hoods and black robes, with skull and crossbones. They firebombed union meetings, murdered union organizers...and dedicated their lives to destroying Jews and Communists. Wealthy media interests also supported fascism. The Hearst papers praised Hitler...the July l934 edition of Fortune magazine said, 'Fascism is achieving in a few years or decades such a conquest of the spirit of man as Christianity achieved only in l0 centuries...'" (Litchfield l8l-3. Emphasis added).

We will see later that George Bush also engaged in the most widespread surveillance of Jewish Americans via the National Security Agency special structures he had created, than any other President in the history of the United States. (See "Under Surveillance: The American Jewish Community, 1984" below.)

In regard to another friend and business associate of Prescott and George Bush and their companies, my sources also had this to say:

"...William H. Draper, jr., joined the Bush team...and was put into a new job slot: handling the Thyssen account...at about the time that Thyssen began to finance Adolf Hitler's political career...Draper's clients sponsored Hitler's terroristic takeover; led the buildup of the Nazi war industry; and his client made war against the U.S...Draper helped...bamboozle Congress so it didn't interfere with Hitler's U.S. money men...Draper helped elect Ernst Rudin as chief of the world eugenics movement, who used his office to promote what he called Adolf Hitler's 'holy, national and international racial hygienic mission'...Just before Farrish died, Prescott Bush's close friend and partner in the Thyssen-Hitler business, William H. Draper, Jr., neither died nor moved out of German affairs. Draper listed himself as a director of the German Credit and Investment Corporation, through l942, and the firm was not liquidated until November l943 ."(Tarpley and Chaitkin, 53-6).

"There was also Draper's money--from that uniquely horrible source--[the concentration camp slave labor-produced aviation fuels, gasolines, and synthetic rubbers he had made millions from]...Draper's son and heir, William H. Draper, III, was co-chairman for finance (chief of fundraising) of the Bush for President national campaign organization in l980." (Tarpley and Chaitkin 53-6).(2)

Yet, now that World War II had started, Draper, despite having been a factor in the creation of Hitler, went to the Pacific theater and became a general in the US Army. (Tarpley and Chaitkin 53-6). In an interesting coincidence of events, he was over the same area that George Bush flew over (Tarpley and Chaitkin 53-6). After the war, though, Tarpley and Chaitkin tell us, Draper got another chance to make up for helping create Hitler:

"In July, l945 Draper was called to Europe by the U.S. government ..to head the Economic Division of the U.S. Control Commission. He was assigned to take apart the Nazi corporate cartels. There is an astonishing butperfectly logical rationale to this--Draper knew a lot about the subject! General Draper, who had spent l5 years financing and managing the dirtiest of Nazi enterprises, was now authorized to decidewho was exposed, who lost and kept his business, and, in practical effect, who was prosecuted for war crimes..In l958, Draper was appointed to a high commission to advise President Eisenhower how to spend foreign aid money..." (Tarpley andChaitkin 53-6).

Here, again, a golden opportunity for Draper to show his true patriotism, renounce old ties to the Nazis and make up for past damage. Yet, as Tarpley and Chaitkin tell us, that's not what he did:

"In December l944 FDR made a statement in which he called for an abolition of the Nazi war machine...Those who...arrived in Germany from the U.S. to disrupt the German cartels were severely handicapped from the start, including Russell A. Nixon...who worked under U.S. Brigadier General William H. Draper...Hequickly realized that Draper was trying to stop him...Nixon found his position was virtually untenable...Hefound that nothing had been done to disband the Nazi cartels...(and he) found Draper had given his staff no directives to close any of the Nazi plants...One man told Nixon he had instructed his team to dismantle an I.G. Farben poison gas plant but had been stopped from doing so by Draper...Nixon went over Draper's head to General Clay, and added that the 'installations and communications systems of Auschwitz had not been destroyed'...Nixon did manage to get a few people indicted, including Paul Dencker, I.G.'s chief accountant in the poison gas division...but Draper kept these from doing any time...Nixon pleaded directly to Washington... "

Tarpley and Chaitkin then tell us that Draper was overruled. However, Draper was then able to get these Nazis and Nazi-sympathizers Nixon had found, released again. After that, Nixon reported to Senator Owen Brewster's War Committee in Washington, at which point Draper sent an official to take over Nixon's operation in l946. Nixon, frustrated, then condemned the entire protection of Nazis by Draper to Sen. Kilgore's investigative committee. New investigators and investigations were authorized but many of 'Draper's Nazis' remained untouched. (Tarpley and Chaitkin 53-6).

I can't help but notice how, even after George Bush got into the Navy and was in active combat in WW2, Prescott's partners at Standard Oil were still engaged in treasonous activities in behalf of the Axis, including efforts by Rodgers and Collier, Standard's execs. in Saudi Arabia, to arrange shipments of oil to Japan in l944--as well as their active support of efforts to re-open embargoed oil shipments to Spain--which shipments went almost directly to the Nazis and other Axis, including Japan, war effort.

And, even though his own son was supposedly under fire from these people, Prescott didn't even take offense! He remained employed with Standard Oil throughout the duration of WW2--and even later, until at least 1952. His closest associates, including the Farrishes, also became George's associates. This is certainly an incredible "no hard feelings" relationship that strains one's credibility to the limit, to say the least.

During l942, then, two significant events happened to the Bush family in America:

(1) George Herbert Walker Bush, at l8 the youngest ever to become an aviator, enlisted in the U.S. Navy: he could never have done so, had his father not "pulled strings" to get him into the Navy; and,

(2) Prescott Bush, Sr., Bush's father--the same father who had just gotten his son into the U.S. navy--was arrested--or indicted (one can quibble over the words--the fact is, he was never found 'not guilty' of the charge, essentially, of treason) for trading with the enemy (in violation of the Trading with the Enemy Act). And, at this point, we find an interesting reference in Tarpley and Chaitkin to "altered records" about Bush's wartime exploits. When we read about George Bush's father's indictment for treason in November 1942, we were initially suspicious. But then we might well have wondered. Maybe Prescott only initially committed treason, and after that was OK. Maybe the reason this petered out was because Prescott fixed it, by becoming a loyal American after George enlisted in June. However, Gen. Bowen tells us, in The Immaculate Deception, that this is not the case:

Prescott Bush served later as director of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., (CBS), the Prudential Company of America, Dresser Industries, Inc., Hydrocarbon Research Trust Co., Inc., Union Banking Co., Vanadium Corp. of America, and the U.S. Guaranty Trust, among other companies until l952...The significance of these corporations is their role in the buildup of Nazi Germany [my italics--mcs]...Most conspicuously absent from all the official Bush biographies, however, is the role of Prescott Bush and his fellow Skull and Bones members in the creation of the Nazi war machine itself through Union Banking Corporation and its Nazi affiliates...In the l930's, Union Banking Corporation had the following directors: E. Roland Harriman, VP of W.A. Harriman and Co., and fellow Club member, Skull and Bones with Prescott Bush. H.J. Kouwenhoven--Nazi banker and Managing Director of Bank Voor Handel. J.G. Groeningen--Nazi member of the steel cartel that also financed Hitler. C. Lievense--President, Union Banking Corp., NY. E.S. James--Partner of W.A. Harriman and fellow initiate in the Prescott Bush l917 cell of Skull and Bones. Prescott Bush--director of the Union Banking Corp. An example of the Brown Brothers and Harriman's assistance to Nazi Germany is their underwriting of Standard Oil agreements in cooperation with GM to supply tetraethyl lead to the Nazis. Ethyl fluid is an anti-knock compound that improves engine efficiency. (Bowen 4-ll).(3)

Interestingly, here, too, we hear from Bowen. Referring to Bellant's report revealing the GOP's "Nazi connection" in the 1970's and '80's, Bowen is the one who ties Bush's family ties directly into the Bellant Report:

"Bush's strategy in l988 and again in l992 of stonewalling revelations about the Nazi war criminal apologists ...His employment in both [my emphases--mcs] campaigns of Fred Malek, a well-known Nazi collaborator, graphically underscores his lack of concern about the victims of Hitler's war machine...Bush springs from an old-line Connecticut family lineage with long-time connections to Wall Street, international bankers, oil interests, and the fascist cartels behind the German Third Reich (Bowen 4-11)."

The Scenarios

Of what, then, am I specifically accusing Mr. Bush? The basic allegation I would be forced to make, was that Mr. Bush arranged to cover up and remove the ad and the book that made the allegation described in the ad. There are several possible scenarios here. These can basically be grouped into two basic types: the "absolutely true" group; and the "politically true" or "in-between" scenarios. It is interesting to note, going into these, that Mr. Robert Stinnett, an official Bush biographer, longtime Bush friend and a fellow member of Bush's combat squadron in World War II, himself admits ( )that Bush had never water landed an aircraft prior to June 19, 1944 and that his squadron's training had been woefully lacking (22, 28 31-4, 36).

1. That Bush and two other persons (neither Delaney nor Nadeau but possibly Robert Stinnett, an OSS/ONI photographer with ties to both Forrestal and Dulles (Stinnett 208) and Ted White, a Skull and Bones Fraternity mate of Prescott Sr., whose father was a banking asociate of the latter and who was a childhood friend of George Bush, were on board the aircraft for the June 19, 1944 emergency take-off. In this and the other scenarios, they land the aircraft, not on the water, but on Guam itself. where they either: (a) deliver a message to the Japanese and leave on the plane's life raft, or (b) promptly exit the island on the life raft. They then claim to have water landed, to cover up either their delivery of the Standard Oil-backed, Allen Dulles-designed message to the Japanese, or their malfeasance in landing on an enemy-held island due to lack of training in water landing techniques..

2. That Bush, Delaney and Ted White, were on board the aircraft for the emergency take-off. Nadeau, in keeping with his "jinx" theory of the number 13, is not on the plane. (The plane's number adds up to thirteen and this is the thirteenth combat mission of the aircraft during the month of June, an emergency take-off: any balking at all by Nadeau would give White an opportunity to get ahead of him for the emergency take-off.) Delaney was knocked unconscious by a blow by Ted White, placed in a separate raft and picked up either by the USS Healy on June 23, 1944, (Stinnett 76-9; 84-5, 201n )or the USS Clarence K. Bronson on June 19, 1944 (Stinnett 73-4; 201n). Or vice-versa, with Bush and Nadeau being picked up separately. In this scenario, the official Marine records which state that "no US air raids by carrier-based planes were made against Chi Chi Jima between July 4, 1944 and February, 1945" become all-important, as does the lack of a date for the squadron commander's log for the supposedly September 2, 1944, Chi Chi Jima raid. This is important, since in this scenario, Delaney would have had to be killed to prevent any discrepancies in the account. If the Chi Chi Jima raid occurred on July 4, 1944, instead of September 2, 1944, Delaney would have been killed by White and the two bailed out to cover up his murder. Likewise, in this and the earlier scenario, Nadeau is silenced as to his not having been present on the flight by a court-martial proceeding arranged about his "jinx" theory on June 25, 1944; to keep himself out of even hotter water, Nadeau is only too willing to make up a false account of being on board the flight. Bush "allows" him to do so allegedly out of kindness and without revealing to him what actually happened on the flight.

The two above-listed scenarios can be divided up between the two subdivisions to produce a "politically true" scenario that would be true in the sense that it would have required a bit of an explanation by Bush, perhaps more of one than he had time for in the closing weeks of the 1980 Presidential election. Thus, Bush (1) could have flown with unauthorized substitute crewmen and actually landed on the water, but the act of covering up the false report of Delaney and Nadeau being on the plane could have rendered him vulnerable to the larger charge; (2) or his flight with substitutes in June could have had the date altered from June 19 to June 9, the latter a flight Robert Stinnett (62) claims is the one he was on with Bush.(3) Stinnett may have flown earlier with Bush exactly as reported--on June 9, then flown again, unreported, in the place of Nadeau or Delaney. (4) White's presence on the flight was also unauthorized, but would have had to be covered up as well by family friend's in the military and civilian structures around Bush's squadron. The landing on Guam might have involved the delivery of a message, or merely Bush and his substitute crew hoofing it off the island. The level of guilt is different in the two scenarios, but the vulnerability to the book ad's charge would remain. There are certain arguments for and against each of these scenarios.

All scenarios basically start in October l942. Prescott Bush had just gotten his son into the United States Navy as an aviator the previous June) when learned he is in trouble for violating the Trading with the Enemy Act, in helping his associates at Standard sell oil to the Nazis and Japanese.

Simultaneous to this deep embarrassment to he and his family, he learns that one of his closest associates and family friends, William Stamps Farrish, has died of a heart attack partly, perhaps, because of stress from the Congressional hearings in which he was grilled about his part in the build-up of Hitler and his war machine (though the questioning never got to his part in the building of Auschwitz).

Prescott Bush, like most other high-income, high-positioned American oil company executives, strongly resents Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He also despises most of his policies, including his foreign policy and much of his war.

His precious young son, George, insists on going to the war, though. He is, in fact, spoiling to go--spoiling to fly an airplane. The thought of losing not only his good friend but now also his own son, enrages the senior Bush to the core, and he decides to manipulate events, to ensure that his George remains safe.

Prescott makes certain of these arrangements through his connections with Jesse Jones, pro-oil Secretary of Commerce, his old friends and fraternity mates Artemus Gates, Secretary of War for Air, and Robert Lovett, Secretary of the Navy for Air, Secretary of the Navy and head of Office of Naval Intelligence James Forrestal, Standard Oil business partner, OSS Switzerland station chief Allen Dulles, a Standard Oil business associate and Prescott's attorney, General William Draper, one of the top Army commanders over Bush's area of the Pacific, who is a business partner in Standard's banking and petrochemical activiities, who made a mint off sales to Auschwitz of Standard's poison gas and is now busily trying to salvage the Axis for further money-making business deals, General Richard K. Sutherland, Chief of Staff to General MacArthur with pro-Axis political leanings and who's father is an old legal community and political associate of Prescott Bush, Sr., and Admirral Koffmann, commander of the destroyer rescue force around Bush's carrier, who will soon become an in-law of the Bush family: his daughter is engaged at this time to Prescott, Jr.). They have his son George Bush stationed in the Pacific in an air squadron that will do high-altitude flying, often photographic missions. They can access the necessary records whenever necessary to make deletions, alterations or classified status.

He has a promise to keep to William Stamps Farrish, as well. He must re-establish contact with the Japanese. He has to arrange an additional shipment of Arabian oil, via the Persian Gulf, to the Japanese in Thailand, the Burma-India border area, or the newly- "independent" Andaman Islands off India's coast, via Standard's executives in Saudi, Rodgers and Collier.

And he also wants to keep his son alive. He makes his son promise him that he will always fly high, avoiding contact with the low-altitude designed Japanese aircraft. The low-altitude limitation of Japanese aircraft had become more widely-known to the allied military after the debacle in Malaya and Singapore in January and February of l942--but it was common knowledge to western oil execs. earlier--that one could easily avoid Japanese aircraft by simply flying high; the Hawker Hurricane, British fighter plane, had proven ineffective against the Japanese Zero because of its high-altitude flight, which put it too high to encounter Japanese planes.

So Prescott, sr., knew that George would be safe flying high. And the excuse would be, initially, engine trouble--mysterious -hydraulic problems' which the carrier's mechanics would be unable to locate. (Hyams 50). Subsequently, the excuse would be "photoreconnaisance" for the OSS and Naval Intelligence, arranged, through Artemus Gates and Robert Lovett in the Cabinet, (Tarpley and Chaitkin 20-90) James Forrestal, John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, (Tarpley and Chaitkin 20-90; Loftus and Aarons 350-90) and Bill Casey at OSS (Bowen 29); and by Bill Draper, Prescott, sr.'s business partner in building Auschwitz, now a General in the Pacific over Bush (Tarpley and Chaitkin 53-6). He may have been helped also by Richard K Sutherland, son of Prescott's old Supreme Court associate and the top aide to General MacArthur, who held extreme right-wing views about US rule by a fascist dictatorship (Manchester 202-3), had been instrumental in the confusion that resulted in the destruction of US air power in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion in 1941 shortly after Pearl Harbor (Manchester 230-6; Toland 57-63), and who was generally abrasive and disliked by many people around him. (Manchester 349). (4)

Through Lovett, George's carrier commander, Captain Martin, could have been promoted and bribed into silence. George would fly high, avoid Japanese planes, land on Guam, deliver Farrish's message, and arrange an additional meeting in the Japanese home islands (Chi Chi Jima). Ted White would accompany Bush on both missions. (though his presence on the Guam mission would be denied by Lee Nadeau, Bush's regular crewman and an OSS photographer.)

The other crewman who would know--Delaney--would be killed by White over ChiChi Jima. But White also died there, and his death throws a monkey wrench into the plan. And an adequate tanker cannot be arranged for this potentially most-profitable of all late war oil shipment.

George's earlier missions thus see him rapidly ascending to a great height, promptly diving steeply to land on the carrier. Then, during the "Marianas Turkey Shoot," when the Japanese hit George's carrier, George's plane hurriedly takes off, depth charges under the wings, with, officially, George, Delaney and Nadeau on the plane. they land on the water, where the plane sinks as they escape on a raft. As they escape, the plane supposedly explodes as it sinks, due to the depth charges going off.

But there are gaps in the dates of the return of the three (some seeming to see Nadeau or Delaney much earlier than a "pilot" (Bush was the pilot of the plane) who is lost off Guam and unnamed in some records. There is, in addition, a 48-hour or more gap as to when all three men are officially back on board the San Jac.

In reality, what has happened,in this "absolutely true" is that Bush, White, and Delaney (who is knocked unconscious by a severe blow to the head, possibly administered by White), land their plane on Guam and deliver their Standard Oil message to the , Japanese commander. George brandishes his Cross of Malta, and White may have had one, too (since his father was a fellow member of Skull and Bones Fraternity with Prescott Bush and other pro-fascist industrialists and Standard Oil personages). They could have been supplied them by their fathers, their company, Standard Oil, whose President was named a Knight of Malta by the Pope in 1928 (Higham 29), or by OSS station chief Allen Dulles, who uses Vatican couriers like the Knights of Malta to deliver messages to the Axis. (Loftus and Aarons 350-70). They are also helped in their endeavors by Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal, also a partner at Standard Oil. (See "Disappearing Act: James Forrestal Under Surveillance" in the present book.)

In this way or in some other manner, perhaps using documents pertaining to the Axis coup in Iraq of April 1941 that may have been supported by Standard Oil, (see "We Will Exterminate Them" in the present book), they prove themselves to be friends of the Japanese and representatives of Standard Oil. They seek to speak to the Japanese high command. Since they cannot, they request to know if Japan would be interested in an oil shipment from Saudi Arabia to Burma, as a tanker may be available. They will contact the Japanese in the "home islands," which, in this definition would have included the Bonin Islands, one of which was Chi Chi Jima, to find out what their response will be.

Needless to say, the Japanese commander on Guam is bowled over. He tells the subsequent American occupation force about it. As luck would have it, the force is led by General William Draper. After occupation. Draper, in charge of wartime trials, sees to it that any knowledgeable Japanese commanders on Guam who haven't already been killed in combat are promptly executed.

The unconscious Delaney is placed in the raft by Bush and White and shoved out to sea, where he is picked up by the Navy much earlier than they are--helping to explain the confusion as to the dates when the three are returned. Another part of the equation for confusion is the presence of Nadeau on the carrier even earlier than Delaney--only a few hours later, when he is seen by other members of the crew.

While still on Guam, George and Ted make sure the Japanese have four choice samples of U.S. depth charges to examine, as well as an undamaged U.S. torpedo bomber. George also destroys all his reconnaissance pix from the gun cameras and sets fire to them in front of the Japanese to prove his good will. He may also have been able to show them cables and/or correspondence between Standard Oil and the Emperor of Japan concerning mutual promises to continue trading whether or not America came into the war. After some hours on Guam getting their messages translated and the proper security clearances from the Axis, they are picked up out of the water off Guam by a U.S. destroyer.

Delaney seems a weak link. Why wouldn't Bush and White have simply killed him at this point? They'd need an excuse for not having his body. They'd have to explain how it happened. His body might be examined, given that the three had supposedly not been anywhere near enemy forces.

They might have claimed he'd drowned, but what would have been the circumstances in which this happened? The circumstances for a drowning for any member of the crew would have just been too suspicious. Bush and White would eventually kill Delaney, but they had to get a better situation arranged for doing so without suspicion. Over Chi Chi Jima, White shoots and kills Delaney, (Mierzejewski's "puff of smoke"), in order to silence this single witness. Then, Bush bails out. White's chute fails to open, however, and he dies. But Bush lives on. The shipment they'd tried to arrange is loaded on a Saudi tanker, but it fails to get through to the Japanese, between American planes and Burmese guerillas. (See "The Incriminating Burmese-British Military Documents" in the present book). Bush is in the water off Chi Chi Jima as it sinks.

General Draper or Dulles ensures that Forrestal gets Bush's plane on Guam burned by Forrestal himself with possible help from a few others in the ONI or OSS. Bush was on leave on Guam shortly after it was captured by U.S. forces. Thus, he himself may have been able to ensure the plane had been successfully destroyed by Forrestal. US Marine Tom Devine reports that not only his eyewitness of Forrestal's destruction of an aircraft, but also the report of a US Navy submarine having spotted sinking, burning debris not related to a sinking ship, backs up his account of seeing Forrestal on the island of Saipan burning an aircraft the Navy Secretary had flown in from a nearby location (possibly Guam). Bush's leave on Guam would mean even fewer persons would have been needed in Forrestal's cover-up.

It wasn't just in the oil business that the Bushes helped the Nazis. We are told that, via a shipping line they managed and owned in part, they helped get the Nazis off to agood start "Bush's firm merged with Hamberg-Amerika, as Hapag-LLoyd's...a supervisor from the Nazi Labor Front rode with every ship of this line...(from l934)...Christian J. Beck was named manager of freight and operations by Bush's company...Two months before moving against Prescott Bush's Union Banking Company [in November, l942] the U.S. government ordered the seizure of all property of the Hamburg-Amerika Line and the North German Lloyd under the Trading with the Enemy Act. The investigators noted that Beck was still acting as an attorney representing a Nazi firm [--my italics--mcs: in 1942!] ...The Geman Atlantic Cable Company attempted to stop payment on its debts to smaller American bondholders. The money was to be used [instead] to arm the Nazi state, under a decree from Hitler. Despite the busy efforts of Bush, [this is in l937--mcs] a New York court decided that this particular Hitler -law' was invalid in the United States; small bondholders, not parties to deals between the bankers and the Nazis, were entitled to get paid (in l937). For his part in the Hitler revolution, Bush was paid a fortune. This is the legacy he left to his son, President George Bush. . . (Tarpley and Chaitkin 34-40)."

All of this was done, during the Depression, by Prescott Bush in order to protect his family from poverty--or perhaps just a drop in status:

The Bushes were cushioned from the suffering endured by the majority of Americans (during the Depression). The Hamburg-Amerika steamship line whose work force was controlled by the Nazi Labor Front poured money into the... Bush coffers. The Bushes lived in a large, dark-shingled house with broad verandas on Grove Lane in the Deer Park section of Greenwich, Connecticut. They were attended by four servants...(Bowen 1-4).

Well, all of that was a long time ago. One would like to think that, as President and in sensitive National Security matters, this World War II "veteran" would at least have shut off his association with Nazi types. Not so, we are told:

"...Byelorussian American Association leader, Stanislaw Stankievich, one-time editor of a Nazi-funded newspaper, came from an upper-class family of Nazi collaborators. He became a mayor of Borrisow in l941. After having built a wall around the Jewish sector of the city, Stankievich conducted a series of financial extortions on the contained ghetto. His police then sadistically exterminated the seven thousand Jews of Borrisow on October 20, l941...The l985 Republican Heritage Groups Council convention delegation ...included Raisa Stankievich, wife of Stanislaw (Bellant ll-12)."

"In l988 the George Bush presidential campaign was presented with the opportunity to repudiate the anti-Semites, Nazi apologists, and fascists who had been recruited into the campaign's ethnic outreach arm through the GOP contacts. Instead of repudiating anti-democratic tendencies and bigotry, Bush chose to sidestep the charges and moved instead to minimize the damage done to the political campaign...The record to date leads to the conclusion that the RNC may consider it forgivable to have been a Fascist collaborator...[I]f this is an incorrect interpretation, then it is incumbent upon them to give a better--and public--explanation of why a tolerance of anti-Semitism, racism authoritarianism and fascism is a hallmark of their foreign policy intrigues abroad and their political coalition building at home. . . (Bellant 90)."

This is the nature of the man who fathered and raised George Herbert Walker Bush . This is his financial history and his ideological history and that of his closest associates He was in deep. Having been bankrolled by Rockefeller's firms in the 1929 to protect his wealthy family from undergoing the throes of the Great Depression along with everyone else, Prescott was now obligated to do anything Rockefeller et al desired in covering up illegal activities in the War. Rockefeller was determined to do all he could to defeat FDR and escape prosecution after the war and he forced many of his underlings to help the process. Prescott, and his son, George, were two of those underlings.

2. 0 "On March 22, l943, an enemy agent on the blacklist was licensed to receive $3,668 by Standard for legal services in Rio...On April 23, l943, [a Standard Oil officer] cabled Zurich confirming the shipment of l6.7 tons of fuel to the Axis. The message was intercepted by censorship and sent most urgently to all branches of intelligence...In a secret document dated June 9, l943, (a Standard Oil officer) in Venezuela was authorized to continue trading with (four) enemy corporations to the tune of a total of l3,000 kilos a month...None of these transactions was ever made public. The details of them remained buried in classified files for over forty years...shipment of oil continued to fascist Spain throughout WW2...The ships to Spain indirectly assisted the Axis through Spanish transferences to Hamburg...more gasoline went to Spain than it did to domestic customers..." (Higham 36-50). Furthermore, in the history of this illustrious, patriotic company, we are told: "Military Intelligence reported to the War Dept. that Standard Oil was shipping oil from Aruba in the Dutch West Indies to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The report continued: 'Standard is diverting about 20% of this fuel to the present German government. About six ships operating in this route are reputed to be manned mainly by Nazi officers. Seamen have reported to the informant that they have seen submarines in the immediate vicinity of the Canary Island and have learned that the submarines are refueling there. The informant has also stated that the Standard Oil Company has not lost any ships to date by torpedoing as have other American companies whose ships operate to other ports." (Higham 38-42).

"By l939, Americans were dangerously short of rubber. The armed services were hard put to complete wheels for planes, tanks and armored cars. At this time Standard Oil had made a deal with Hitler whereby he would obtain certain kinds of Standard artificial rubber and America would get nothing..." (Higham 36).

"Truman's Senate Committee on the National Defense was outraged and began to probe into the whole scandalous arrangement, much to the discomfort of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Suddenly, however, the whole matter was dropped...There is a reason for Rockefeller's escape: blackmail. According to the former intelligence officers we interviewed on this point, the blackmail was simple and powerful: The Dulles brothers had one of their clients threaten to interrupt the U.S. oil supply during wartime. Besides the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, three other members of the U.S. intelligence community insist that Allen Dulles was personally behind the threat to cut off Saudi supplies..[T]he Standard Executives made it clear that the entire U.S. war effort was fueled by their oil and it could be stopped. Arnold could do nothing but accept the fact of the blackmail...The American government had no choice but to go along if it wanted oil to win the war..."(Loftus and Aarons 63-7).

3. 0 3 And what was the penalty for these traitorous associates of Prescott Bush? "One Standard executive paid $1000 or a quarter of one week's salary, for having betrayed the nation. No matter what they did during the war, Dulles's and Forrestal's clients could get away with anything as long as they controlled the Arabian oil wells. That point was driven home by SoCal just as the Allied forces were preparing for the invasion of Normandy. The company demanded profit margins of 250 to 300 percent on production costs for each barrel of Saudi oil sold to the American government. The U.S. government had no choice; it gave SoCal its price increase...President Roosevelt also was forced to appoint Dulles's oil cronies to the very boards that were charged with oversight of such misconduct..." (Loftus and Aarons 63-7).

4. 0 (Eric Morris, in Corregidor: The End of the Line. New York: Stein and Day, 1981, 366-7) tells us that Sutherland also ordered a group of resupply ships docked at Cebu island instead of being sent on into Corregidor. As a result, tons of supplies for US forces were lost. When General Wainwright, the heroic American general, heard about this action, says Morris, he "exploded in a rage (Morris 367)."
